Nokia report a tough Q2 2009

Nokia today has published its Quarter 2 financial results and are reportedly down a staggering 25% on last years Q2 results, they are also down a further 7% on Q1 of this year.  This equates to a staggering €9.9billion loss in sales in one single quarter.

The King of mobiles has lost 2% market share, bringing their share of the market down to a (still healthy) 38% overall.  They have been hit hard by new up and coming competitors like the apple iPhone and RIM Blackberry and all other areas of the business have also been effected.

The Mobile phone industry is has changed from that of a healthy 2005 and continues to change rapidly, Nokia once spent a fortune on R+D and were always ahead of the pack, always that was until the launch of the phone that turned the industry on its head, the Apple iPhone, others like RIM and HTC have been quick to catch up with the launch of similar products that offer fast Internet and applications on the move but Nokia have failed to capture the imagination of this new tech hip customer and have had to rely on their sturdy business phone reputation.  New handsets like the N97 and E71 which on the face of it offer the same features as the iPhone and RIM are bulky and not as easy to receive emails on the go.

I predict that Nokia will continue to loose important ground to smart-phones in the coming years until such times as they get their act together and come up with (if possible) an iPhone killer.

From Silicon Republic

The company’s largest division, Devices and Services, reported sales of €6.6bn, down 28pc year-on-year. The division nonetheless increased margins from 33.8pc in Q1 to 34pc in Q2.

The company shipped device volumes of 103.2 million units, down 15pc year-on-year and down 11pc on Q1.

The company’s share of the global mobile device market also appears to be slipping, down to 38pc from 40pc a year ago.

Software revenues from applications for devices fell from €65m in Q1 to €62m in Q2, despite the launch of its flagship Ovi store.

Its infrastructure division, Nokia Siemens Networks reported sales of €3.2bn, down 21pc year-on-year and down 7pc on Q1.

Online Social Networking, Useful tool or dangerous??

Is social networking taking over your life? Are you using it correctly? or are you asking for trouble?

I have been using Online Social Networking for nearly 14 years now, when I first set up my ICQ personal communication centre back in 1994 to chat to my Family in Australia, and im all for it, when used correctly!

What people do not realise is, that online social networking may be ruining their lifes. Bebo is a prime example, firstly i set up my bebo page about 4 years ago, then deleted it one night after being totally disgusted with it! The thing is, people can and do put anything on their page, and do not realise who can see this. This week i have heard a case about a young girl of 14 being stalked by a 40something man who knew everything about her, what she wore, who she hang about with, her birthday, everything, why? because he looked at her bebo page daily where she documented, photographed and filmed her life! A man in England lost his job this week, because he decided to put on his bebo page what he thought of his boss, his boss was on his friends list……….

Its not just bebo, its myspace and facebook as well, In America, a young girl famously told her mates about her killer party, word spread and the house was trashed. But its the long term damage it causes that worries me, any company worth its salt knows if they are interviewing you that why you leave just pop you name into Google and find you smeared across the pavement of a friday evening in your photos. When you type in the name of a friend of mine into Google, as esteemed business person, up pops a comment left on someones bebo page 2 years ago stating how he is ‘hacked off with work, wants to tell his boss to stick it and is going to go out and get wasted this weekend’ nice image for anyone wanting to know abit more about the charity he works for eh?

Another thing is that school kids seem to live more on these sites than is real life, I actually here conversations like ‘you where not online last night, what where you at?’ WHAT??? I only go online when I have nothing todo or for work!

But its not all bad, and I have to say I do! use these services quite a lot, but not to find out what my mate is doing who just lives around the corner, but to keep in touch with people I cant and dont see, like family in OZ, Scouting friends in USA, Canada, OZ and Ireland, and to meet new scouters, share ideas and plan joint camps. Online Social Networking is a fantastic tool if in the correct hands, but please use it wisely!!!

Bill Gates – The worlds richest man retires

The man that ‘invented’ windows that is used on over 1 billion PCs is retiring, he is worth something stupid like $64 billion and people are asking, what will he do now? and can Microsoft survive without him

What is he going to do now, give the man a break, he has spent his life marketing the worst product ever, It is a difficult thing to make a system that most of the world uses, he has worked tirelessly to make sure, it keeps crashing and that you keep having to upgrade!

The truth of the matter is that he is not as rich as he could be, over 500 million copies of windows in use are illegal unpaid for versions, I know my heart bleeds for the man to

Who really cares what he does now, can he not just do nothing like most people do when they retire

In fairness to the man, and I hate what his company stands for and the tactics they use, He has pledged almost 90% of his worth to his charity and in recent year has done more for the AIDs fight in Africa than the US government

But will Microsoft survive without him, its hard to say, more people are revolting to Apple and using more and more Google products everyday

Openoffice is a free platform which does the same thing if not more than MS Office, I can honestly say te only Microsoft product on my mac is msn messenger, and I am forced to use it because of my friends, otherwise id stick with ICQ which is a much better platform

Anyway Bill, here’s to your retirement, Im sure you will not be bored!
