Northern Irelands response to the swine flu outbreak

Northern Ireland has officially been put on Swine Flu alert.

Speaking at a press conference this  afternoon (3.10pm) Michael McGimsey has laid out the following precaustionary measure after a video conference with COBRA and the WHO.

1. A vaccine will be developed and enough vaccine has been ordered to cover the entire Northern Ireland population, however this will take 6 months to develop, normal flu vaccines have also been ordered to cover the population

2. Poster and leaflets are being produced with information for travelers and every household will receive one.

3. An emergency helpline has been set up – number to follow

4. An emergency control centre has been set up in castle buildings

5. Basic higene will play an important part in combatting this outbreak.

6. There are no confirmed cases in Northern Ireland at present.

7. Anyone with flu like symptoms should first contact their GP for tests.

8. Border controls and screaning will not take place as there are no direct routes to mexico from here.

If you have been to an infected place in the last week and are experiencing flu like symptoms then you should firstly stay and home, not let anyone into your home and contact your GP asap to be tested.

Further to this some genius has set up a handy google map with infected areas and cases around the globe, you can find this by clicking here.

What can we do to stop swine flu entering Ireland shores ?

CORRECTION Mexico FluWhen something like the latest pandemic of swine flue rears its ugly head, we begin to see just how small the world is.  In less than two weeks we have seen it spread from central Mexico to the America’s, Canada, New Zealand and now the UK, all the people who suffer have one thing in common – they have all been to Mexico very recently.

So far there has been no cases of the deadly disease in Ireland and I think its time the three governments here got their heads together to take some drastic measures.

I’m not taking about shutting down the country but the thought does cross my mind that that would certainly solve the issue.  The main problem is that we need to ‘be seen’ to not alienate or discriminate people trying to enter the country whether they be Irish and returning home – or people coming here on travel.

However – I think this is serious enough to at least do something drastic.

If I was lord king of all things Irish – this is course of action I would take.

1.)  Cancel all non essential air and sea traffic including tourism to all infected countries, including the UK Mainland.

2.)  Quarantine all people’s citizens on not returning home from an infected country for a good period of time until we know they are not clear.

3.)  Invest a lot of money into vaccinating the population, starting with school children.

4.)  Advise people to wear face masks – not because there is any risk at the minute, I just think it would look pretty cool.

OK, so I’m pretty sure the government types will not go for my plan, for one it would be a political hotcake and two it would have disasterous effects on the economy but surely its better than sitting back, doing nothing and waiting until it is to late to do something…….

Its just a thought.  Russell

£2,000 car scrappage scheme – bad news for the British car industry

2986837143_1d03517a9e_mThe British Government has today announced a £2,000 car scrapping scheme for people that choose to buy a new car and scrap their old vehicle.

How it works

From next month until March 2010 motorists to get £2,000 discount on new cars if they trade in cars older than 10 years

• The government will provide £1,000 with the industry expected to provide the other half

Whilst on the face of it, this is great news for anyone with an old car looking for a new one – there are huge long term negative effects for the car market and the consumer.

The Irish Government announced something similar a few years back offering people €1000 to scrap their old car against a new one.  The following problems now seen in the Irish market will I am sure be reflected here within the next 5 years.

1.  With fewer (over 10) year old cars on the road now than ever before – the value of these cars have rocketed making it extremely expensive to purchase a ‘cheap runabout’ people will also purchase cheap cars in order to trade them in and scarp them.

2.  Car retailers are less likely to cut you a deal on a new vehicle as they first have to absorb the first £1000 themselves and then wait to claim the second £1000 from the government

3.  Cars that are 2/3 years old fall into this funny area where they are not worth enough money to scrap them, but are to expensive to purchase as you are not receiving the rebate against them, thereby de valuing the product.

4. As all the old cars get crushed, not recycled it becomes extremely difficult to obtain parts for older cars.

5. It is still increasingly difficult to obtain finance on a new car, no matter how much the discount is – if the banks wont lend then there is no money to spend !

In short, I think that this scheme is not only bad for the car business, but it is also bad for the consumer and the wider ‘old car enthusiasts’ like myself.

This is simply another measure from the British Government to use smoke and mirrors to try and get us to spend our way out the recession they created.

Ten Cars that should be saved from the scrapper !

BMW vs Audi

I was sent this interesting picture today, the story goes that Audi put the first billboard up with the picture of their latest A4 and the slogan ‘your move, BMW’

BMW responded with a picture of their latest M3 and the slogan ‘checkmate’ ……….. excellent !

This is the best advertising I have seen in a while and confirms that Audi really have earned their place in the luxery car market and have BMW running scared……. I wonder if Merc will enter into the banter ? I think not

Every now and then – something comes along to unite a nation

OK, so I do watch these rubbish shows like x-factor and Britians got talent, what can I say I’m a young Father and I don’t get out much, anyway on Saturday night out walks on to the stage an unemployed woman who looks like Norah Batty, lives with her cats, claims to have never been kissed and wants to be as big as Elane Page.

Right ….. here comes another wanna be that cannot sing, but then this happened.

From unemployed nobody to an instant super star – one week on and the world is still talking about how she is one of the best things to ever come out of Britian, and 20million youtube visits.

So it just goes to show – no matter how much the media try to promote doom and gloom about job losses and credit crunch nonsense sometimes something like this just comes along and grips the nation, we forget about our troubles and take a minute to just smile and be thankful !

Good luck Susan, your a winner already !

eBay to sell skype in a 2010 IPO

ebayIt has been widely thought in tech circles that eBay paid well over the odds and didn’t really know what they where doing when they paid $3.1Billion for Skype back in 2005, of course back then credit was easy and everyone was a property millionnaire.  Internet companies with no business plans and no profit making future where being snapped of for billions.

Time however have changed, eBay had originally planned to interface Skype with its auction site so that sellers and buyers could easily communicate with each other – unfortunately this did not really take off, however Skype has been preforming well of late as a business in its own right.

Last year they seen user numbers grow 7 times since the takeover and revenue’s are now at a steady $550odd Million per year.skype_logo_1_medium

Skype is one of the big companies when it comes to online communities – they are pretty much the first name when it comes to online telephoney and their recent iPhone App has received great praise from iPhone users – the mobile phone networks however are not as keen to shout about Skypes success.

In these days of crashing stock prices and undervalued companies it is an interesting yet bold move to launch an IPO however one that eBay think they can pull off.  It will either be the daftest or smartest thing they have done since buying the firm.

What remains even more interesting is what the other’s do on the back of this announment. Will Twitter and Facebook take a chance or hold out for a better offer, or better market conditions ?

Innocent smoothies sells (part of) its soul to Coca-Cola

15257240

Innocent smoothies which were part funded by Branson are to sell a minority stake in thier business to soft drink giant and type company Coca-Cola.

The deal is said to be around the £30m mark and is to fuel further expansion and branding into mainland Europe.

Concerned that the cash investment from Coca – Cola may effect their current cult following, in a statement

“We’re excited by this minority investment as it enables us to do more of what we are here to do – get natural, healthy products to as many people as possible,” Richard Reed said.

“All the money is coming into the business to fund our European expansion and the founders will continue to lead and run the company.

“We will be the same people, in the same offices, making the same products in the same way.”

“Every promise that Innocent has made – about making only natural healthy products, pioneering the use of better, socially and environmentally aware ingredients, packaging and production techniques, donating money to charity and having a point of view on the world – will remain

We have seen similar deals like this take place recently

Pret A Manger, which claims to avoid additives and tries to buy organic, sold a third of its business to McDonald’s in 2001.

Green & Black’s, the organic and fair trade chocolate and ice-cream maker, was bought by Cadbury Schweppes in 2005.

So why is it these niche company’s have to accept money from the big boys and more importantly the boy boys that are doing the complete opposite to what they believe it? Put simply money talks, It is all well and good having principles but if it doesn’t fuel your business then it needs to come from somewhere.

Why would Coca-Cola want to do this deal? – well times are changing and people are more health minded so its really a matter of if you can’t beat them – Join them !!

EU Data retention directive hits UK shores

FROM BBC

Details of user e-mails and net phone calls will be stored by internet service providers (ISPs) from Monday under an EU directive.

The plans were drawn up in the wake of the London bombings in 2005.

ISPs and telecoms firms have resisted the proposals while some countries in the EU are contesting the directive.

Jim Killock, executive director of the Open Rights Group, said it was a “crazy directive” with potentially dangerous repercussions for citizens.

All ISPs in the European Union will have to store the records for a year. An EU directive which requires telecoms firms to hold on to telephone records for 12 months is already in force.

The data stored does not include the content of e-mails or a recording of a net phone call, but is used to determine connections between individuals.

Authorities can get access to the stored records with a warrant.

Governments across the EU have now started to implement the directive into their own national legislation.

The UK Home Office, responsible for matters of policing and national security, said the measure had “effective safeguards” in place.

Keyboard

There is concern that access to our data is widening to include many public bodies

ISPs across Europe have complained about the extra costs involved in maintaining the records. The UK government has agreed to reimburse ISPs for the cost of retaining the data.

Mr Killock said the directive was passed only by “stretching the law”.

The EU passed it by “saying it was a commercial matter and not a police matter”, he explained.

“Because of that they got it through on a simple vote, rather than needing unanimity, which is required for policing matters,” he said.

Sense of shock

He added: “It was introduced in the wake of the London bombings when there was a sense of shock in Europe. It was used to push people in a particular direction.”

Sweden has decided to ignore the directive completely while there is a challenge going through the German courts at present.

“Hopefully, we can see some sort of challenge to this directive,” said Mr Killock.

Isabella Sankey, Policy Director at Liberty, said the directive formalised what had already been taking place under voluntary arrangement for years.

“The problem is that this regime allows not just police to access this information but hundreds of other public bodies.”

In a statement, the Home Office said it was implementing the directive because it was the government’s priority to “protect public safety and national security”.

It added: “Communications data is the where and when of the communication and plays a vital part in a wide range of criminal investigations and prevention of terrorist attacks, as well as contributing to public safety more generally.

“Without communications data resolving crimes such as the Rhys Jones murder would be very difficult if not impossible.

“Access to communications data is governed by the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 (Ripa) which ensures that effective safeguards are in place and that the data can only be accessed when it is necessary and proportionate to do so.”

Sweet home Lagan Valley – Javagate the song

A short hash on the classic Sweet home Alabama to cheer up a few annoyed people this day – a parody about Javagate if you will !!

Jeep wheels keep on turning

Carry me home to where I live

Singing songs about the Valley

I miss old Lisburn once again

And I think its a sin, yes

Well I heard a Lisburn MP speak about it

Well, I heard bean and gone got shut down

Well, I hope that MP will remember

A Lisburn man don’t need him around anyhow

Sweet home Lagan Valley

Where the Coffee samples are free

Sweet Home Lagan Valley

Girl, I’m coming home to you

In Lisburn town they love the governor

Now we all did what we could do

Now Javagate does not bother me

Does your conscience bother you?

Tell the truth

Sweet home Lagan Valley

Where the Coffee samples are free

Sweet Home Lagan Valley

Girl, I’m coming home to you

Here I come Lisburn City

Now Bean and Gone has got the twitters

And they’ve been known have a follower  or two

Boy those coffee’s tastes so great

They pick me up when I’m feeling blue

Now how about you?

Sweet home Lagan Valley

Where the Coffee samples are free

Sweet Home Lagan Valley

Girl, I’m coming home to you

Oh sweet home baby

Where the coffee samples are free,

And the governor’s could be true,

Sweet Home Lagan Valley

Lordy Lord, I’m coming home to you Yea, yea the people’s got the answer
