Oh how the mighty have fallen – Bebo's fall from grace

I was an early adopter of Bebo sometime late 05 early 06, so early none of my friends joined it until much later.  The new fresh, young energetic site that allowed you to update your status, post things on friends walls, publish blog posts and photos to share with your friends and more.  It was really the 2nd ‘social networking’ site to come along on a global scale, after myspace of course and discounting friends re-united which never really left the UK.

What Bebo did, was allowed the masses to connect in a simple format and that is exactly what people did.  Bebo was huge in the UK, Ireland and New Zealand and still today Bebo is the 14th busiest website in Ireland.  It wasn’t long however until Bebo had a new kid in town to watch out for.  Social networking done………… somehow better, that new kid was Facebook.

Bebo failed to capture the hearts of the yanks though, unlike myspace with millions of users and Facebook which recently claimed to have 210million US users, Bebo at its US peak only had 5.8million users.

I work with youth groups a lot, In fact I am a scout leader and it was interesting to see how and why young people chose to be on Bebo or Facebook, it seemed to me that Bebo was really socially acceptable up until 5th year but when you moved into lower 6th it was time to start smoking move onto the more mature Facebook.  So when people tell you Bebo is for kids, they really mean it !

The only problem with kids as the main users of your site (aside from all the privacy concerns) is that they don’t click on advertisements and without the ads, the site dies.

Well this is embarrassing ……………. for AOL. AOL purchased Bebo just under two years ago for the pricey sum of US$850m, today AOL are looking at closing it down for good or finding someone to take it off there hands, they say

“Bebo, unfortunately, is a business that has been declining and, as a result, would require significant investment in order to compete in the competitive social networking space. AOL is not in a position at this time to further fund and support Bebo in pursuing a turnaround in social networking.”

The fall of Bebo proves only a few things

1. The Internet is a fical place

2. No matter what you do, someone will do it better

3. When the price is high sell !

4. Someone will do it better than Facebook ! Although what Facebook have achieved in a short time is amazing, more people use facebook every day than watch porn online, no other web service can say that !

5. The only people that gain from the sale of a social network, are the founders
