Learning to fly, but I ain't got wings

Tom Petty says that coming down is the hardest thing, however for my Wife it is a different story.

Around 10 years ago, whilst on holiday with her family my Wife developed a fear of flying and was petrified of coming home.  She has no idea what triggered it or brought it on but it has been there ever since.  Around a year later, we went on holiday (by plane) and I have to say it was the worst holiday I have ever been on, her fear of the return flight ruined the holiday,

Needless to say, she has never flown since despite the fact that I fly every month.  What scares most is not death itself but the way one might die if the plane was in an accident.  September 11 obviously did not help the issue.

We have a daughter now and Linzi (my wife) is determined to get over this fear so we can show Hannah (our daughter) the world.

She is not really interested in getting drugged up but thinks hypnotherapy might be the answer, so my question to you is.  Do you know of anyone or anything that can help her ?

Arlene has exactly the same issue. And the problem with hypnotherapy is that the irrational fear of flying stops the non-flyer from attending the sessions because (quite rightly):

“you’re just trying to get me on a plane!”

So bearing this in mind for our honeymoon, over 12 days in Summer 2008 we went to Sweden, Finland, Russia, Estonia, Germany and Denmark and this June we’re off to Gibraltar, France, Italy, Sardinia, Spain and Portugal for 14 days with the kids.

Not flying doesn’t mean you don’t get to see the world. You just end up picking and choosing your fights :)

And you see why I’m interested in getting my own yacht?

  2. Yeah, I understand Matt.

She wants to get it sorted though ! which is a good step.

I did the same thing for honeymoon, a cruise in fact it was the one you are going on that we went on ! However this summer Linzi wants to go to Paris. Driving and boating it is working out at £800 where as flying is around £140!!

    You need Sylvia Buet http://www.anapsys.co.uk/
She comes highly recommended by friends and family. My Mum was phobic and now flies quite regularly with little no no anxiety.
I myself how no desire to ever fly again, even more so since having children. We make driving/ sailing to our destinations part of the holiday :)

  4. Aside from hypnotherapy, there is a well-regarded book on this subject by Allen Carr (not the comedian!)

Think I saw it in Easons in Lisburn a while back.

    Hope that helps.

  5. Thanks Davey, I will also look into that

I could take her up for an hour. A few barrel rolls and she’ll be cured for sure >:)

  7. Not sure how helpful that would be Shane but it would be comical to see her face !

there used to be a fear of flying course you could go on at aldergrove, not sure if it is still running or not.

CBT, or cognitive Behavioural Therapy, they do a limited number of sessions (10-12) and will go through everything from finding out the cause of the fear, to imagiing the situation step by step, to actually going to the problem place and getting through the fear, and they can also do relaxation techniques…

You can see a guy in Lisburn Health centre and it really works, I was attacked in the mall back when I worked in P4U, and hadn’t been able to set food in the food court since. I’ve now been up there with the therapist, on my own and can now order food and sit by myself up there if I want!

Amazing and well worth it, also covered by NHS so free!
